Hello Everyone,
As 2012 is quickly approaching, I will fill you in on what 2011 did or did not produce.
The Swika clan is all doing well.
Stephen III is now a 3rd degree Mason. Paula is still making pretzels and is now marketing kits for the do it at home Pretzel Makers. We wish her well in this new endeavor. Ursula is now engaged to a nice fellow named Gavin. They have not yet set a date. Melissa and her daughter Peyton have moved back to the area.
Sandy and David are both well. Adam is working with me at the shop and still riding Roller Coasters when he can. Alicia is still working at the Scranton/Wilkes Barre Yankees Stadium.
CherylAnn and Michael’s crew keep them busy. Sabastian is back in the USA after a 6 month Tour of Duty with the Navy. He is now in Washington State but was home with us for Thanksgiving. He sure looks good. Corey is still studying hard at college. Evan has started working at the local McDonald’s. Emily is growing like a weed and is now taller than her mother.
Valerie is home for Christmas and we are having a great time!
As for me, I am doing well. I lost my boy, George Burns, this year. Gracie now goes everywhere with me. I am working hard at the shop with the crew, Ronnie, Bud, Bruce, Don and Chuck. We are painting the Zipper trailer after we put a new steel deck on it and re-racked it for the new aluminum fence and gates. It sure looks good!
Steph is still handling the office and David is still driving for Wal-Mart. Tiff has started working at the local Weis. Jordan loves baseball and has started taking pitching lessons from a professional baseball player, Ron Chiavacci. He is also getting batting lessons from the Scout for the Red Sox.
2011 was a tough year. We were near an earthquake but thankfully we had no damage. Several tornadoes touched down near us but again we incurred no damage. Then came hurricane Irene. It caused severe flood damage in our area. Many people are still without homes. The weather was not good to us this year. It was super hot in July and then rained the rest of the season. 2011 was sure not a profitable year.
Our Haunted Hayride showed great promise this Fall. Cherylann, Paula & Stephen run their food stands and this year Steph and Dave took over the merchandise stand. We lost opening day to rain and then had an amazing run until the last 2 days when we were put out of business due to 11” of snow! The weather also put a damper on the pumpkin patch and Knoebels Halloween Celebration.
The year saw the passing of several of our Showmen friends and associates: Archie Brotzman of AEB Amusements, Otto Pfeffer of Otto’s Amusements and our dear friend and retired Popcorn Kernel Doug Ford. All of this brings to mind that our beloved Jackie has been gone for 4 years as of November.
Well “It Is What It Is”
Hope you have a safe and healthy 2012.
Stephen Swika, Jr.
